Descriptive Written Test in SSC CGL As Tier III Examination

The Staff Selection Commission has recently announced the new examination pattern for SSC CGL examination. Now the recruitment procedure through this Examination will include one more phase i.e. tier III examination as descriptive written test. This change has come as the biggest surprise for the candidates as no one has ever thought of getting included this phase in this examination. This test will be of 100 marks and total 60 minutes will be allotted to complete it. This will comprise essay writing, letter etc. however, the total number of questions to be included in the examination is not mentioned. Through this article we are going to discuss about this newly included paper in the examination.

Reason for Introducing Descriptive Test in SSC CGL

After a long period of time, SSC has re-introduced the descriptive examination in its SSC CGL examination from 2016 onwards. Apart from this number of questions are also reduced from 200 to100 and time from 2 hours to 75 minutes. Another important change introduced by SSC is to hold Tier I and Tier II examination online. But the descriptive test will be a paper and pen based test. Now we will discuss the reasons for introducing this examination in the recruitment process.

To test the writing skills:

This is the basic reason of introducing descriptive examination in the recruitment process. As both the Tier I and Tier II examinations are objective type, it becomes difficult for the recruiters to know about the writing skills of the candidates. As the interview round has been removed from the recruitment procedure, through this examination the writing and thinking skills, and intelligence of the candidates will be judged.

Ideal Option for Recruiting Candidates:

This is a well-thought change made by the commission as recruiting the candidates only through objective type examinations was not a good idea. So, through this examination the overall intelligence level of the candidates will be tested.

Selecting candidates with right attitude:

This is one of the reason for introducing descriptive test in the recruitment procedure. After getting selected the employees under the posts offered through this examination have to handle the official communication between various departments of different ministries. So, it is necessary to test the communication skills of these candidates.

Helping in Forming Opinions:

As the interview process has been abolished from the recruitment procedure of SSC CGL. As a government employee, the commission needs to test the opinion forming ability of the candidates on different issues.

Communication Skills:

These skills were used to be tested through interview round, but from now these will be tested through this newly introduced test. Communicating with higher authorities and media is the priority of the Government now. So, one needs to be a good communicator to represent the policies and decisions made by the Government. Through this descriptive test the recruiters will get to know about how good you are as a communicator.
