Selection of Stenographers through SSC Examination: Every year Staff Selection Commission conducts examination to recruit stenographers in Grade C and Grade D for the different departments of Government. To appear in this examination one should have passed 12th and should possess good typing skills.

Job Role of Stenographers:

Stenographers under Grade “C” are hired mostly for the Departments and Ministries of Central Government, which are mostly situated in Delhi. While the jobs of stenographers hired under Grade “D” are listed below:
Group “X”: Candidates under this group are basically appointed for the different departments and ministries of Government of India. Selected candidates are mostly posted in Delhi.

Group “Y” – Aspirants selected under Group “Y” are appointed for offices of Central Government including the offices located in Union Territories and States of the country.

Roles, Responsibilities and Duties of a Stenographer:

Speech Writing: Most common work that is assigned to a stenographer is of speech writing. He or she is assigned work under a senior officer and he or she has to note down the speech, which is given by the senior.

Preparing Briefs of Press Conference: Stenographers are asked to accompany the ministers or senior officers to the press conferences. There they have to note the speech given by ministers, which they are asked to summarize later on. This helps in releasing the press release later on.

Giving Assistance to Minister or Officer: Stenographers, who are attached to the specific ministers are asked to assist the ministers or officers in preparing the speech for them. Stenographers are aware of the topics more than other people because they are constantly involved in the proceedings of the government.

Helping in Public Relations: Public Relation Officers are responsible to circulate information to public on regular basis regarding the status of a department in a certain issue or decision. So, they are the ones who are profited the most by the stenographers as they help them in making notes and writing the speech.

Career Prospects:

When looked from the prospect of career and nature of the job, a very few opportunities of promotion do a stenographer got within the government administration. But if a candidate clears the internal examinations of the department on time, he or she gets distinguished chances to get promoted to higher positions.
Therefore, the basic job of a stenographer is to carry out the stenography work for a particular ministry or officer and with constant clearing of examinations he or she can reach to the higher positions in their career.
